The old Asus K53TA I’m typing this out on is literally held together by tape. It’s taken an utter beating over the last 8 years and needs to be replaced. I want another Asus simply because this one has been through hell and back but it still works. Alas, I can’t stand having the charger held in by Duct Tape anymore.
I’m looking for something that would be a modern equivalent to the K53TA. Something for light to moderate gaming, but nothing serious (literally just like Beam NG, Automation & Wreckfest).
The basics of what I have now in the K53 are:
8GB DDR3 RAM with 1GB dedicated video memory, AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics card, 750GB hard drive, and a AMD Fusion APU A6-3400M processor.
That was pretty decent back in 2011 when I bought it, I’m just wondering what the modern equivalent is. I’ve fallen way behind in todays tech so I know nothing... Shoot me your recommendations!

Can’t make a recommendation without knowing your budget.
So... What’s your budget?

Somewhere in and around the $1000 mark.

Used Vaio? That’s what I’d get if we weren’t a Mac family ...

If you want to stick with AMD, here is something you can get that will be faster than what you have for CAD$600:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_369&item_id=116402
Or for US$429 from the Asus online store:
Or for more performance, this for US$700:
Of course for both of these, I would recommend immediately upgrading the RAM to at least 16GB and replace that internal hard drive with an SSD. It will make a huge difference in performance.
And then turn the standard 5400rpm hard drive into external storage by putting it into an enclosure like this:

Note that if you can, you might want to wait a couple of months when mobile Ryzen laptops are more widely available.

If you want ASUS, the closest things to a new version of what you have will be the FX502 and FX503.
502: https://www.amazon.com/Flagship-Performance-i7-7700HQ-GeForce-Keyboard/dp/B077ZTFZ23
503: https://www.amazon.com/FX503VM-Powerful-i7-7700HQ-Quad-Core-Windows/dp/B076KVCSRN
In the ones listed above, the 503 has a more powerful graphics card, but the the 502 has a bigger SSD. You can find a bunch of configurations out there.
Here are the ASUS pages:
https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/FX502VD/
https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/FX503/
Personally, if I were going to get an ASUS laptop I’d get this one: https://www.amazon.com/UX330UA-AH5Q-13-3-inch-Ultra-Slim-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B06XSZC11D , because it’s an ultraportable with a 3200x1800 screen, and I’d sacrifice performance for that, but it would be really weak for gaming (no way it could drive that display at anything near native resolution). To get a Zenbook that’s OK for gaming, you’d have to go to the Zenbook Pro, which is 50% more than you want to spend.

Get whatever T-series Thinkpad fits your budget. It will outlive you. (Note: outlive-you guarantee applies only to the T-series.) Refurbished and off-lease ones from Lenovo or Amazon are an especially good deal.

My wife has a Zenbook with the high-res screen. It’s a great little laptop. I keep getting them for people at the office and everyone is quite happy with them...

Is this still true with the Lenovos? The T-series ones I’ve purchased seemed pretty good, but I’ve had bad luck overall with their products. Dell Latitudes are far more robust and seem to be the longest-lived compared to lesser Lenovos.
I had a T-series built back when IBM designed/built them. It was a tank. It didn’t become flaky until it was literally drop kicked when it was pulled off my desk and the person that did it tried to catch it with their foot. Slightly bent the case, but it was enough to damage something and it was never the same. I miss that laptop, it was with me such a long time.

I’ve had T-series since the T20 days and am happy as ever with them, including the T520 on which I’m writing this right now. I own 3-4 at a time, so I know them well.

My T23 was a daily carry for 6+ years until the above incident. Do you carry any of yours constantly like I used to? It was literally my only computer and I traveled a lot back then.

Yup. Used to carry an X61, a T42, lots of others over the years, also traveling a lot, just throwing the laptop into gym bag usually. Finally I just started keeping multiple laptops. One T500 lives in my car. I used to actually store a T60 at a coffeeshop I frequented.

I have an ASUS Zenbook ux305ca with the QHD+ screen: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014VHWFKA
Great deal for what it is, but the processor is so weak. I’d definitely say it’s worth spending the money to get some thing with a better CPU.

Everyone there is a spreadsheet jockey, but the ones we bought have not been “Core M”. I believe my wife’s has a 6th gen i7 of the mobile persuasion. It lasts so long on a charge that she often forgets to charge it, too.
The most recent one I got someone was a UX430UA, which has an 8550U. It’s ridiculous overkill for their usage.

fuck apple, don’t buy their crippled dongle infested overpriced crap.
honestly, i’d just get a refurb’d laptop on ebay for under $500... you could get a nice elitebook 840 G2 (that’s what I have) i5 skylake, 8GB RAM (upgradable) M.2 SSD + 2.5" SATA bay. iGPU but even modern iGPUs have come a long way and many games are playable, just not on higher settings.
latitude E7xxx series is also good

I just upgraded to a
Lenovo 720s
last month, aiming for something with a small/portable size, good battery, passable light/moderate gaming performance, and decent thermals (to avoid throttling). It’s performed very well on all of those fronts so far, and the build quality looks to be very good. That said, the same amount money could probably stretch into something more potent if you don’t mind a bit less portability and/or battery life though.
